Most online image converters upload your files to a server. MediaBay doesn't. Here's the difference, point by point.
| MediaBay | Other converters | |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer | MediaBay No upload — processed locally, in your RAM | Other converters Your files uploaded to a cloud server |
| Speed | MediaBay Instant — independent of your connection | Other converters Slow — capped by your network upload speed |
| Privacy | MediaBay Absolute — no file kept, no trace | Other converters Files stored temporarily on third-party servers |
| Limits | MediaBay No paywall — up to 100 MB per file, no watermark | Other converters Aggressive limits (often 5 MB) or forced watermarks |
Open the DevTools (the F12 key in most browsers) → Network tab, then run a conversion (for example convert JPEG to PNG, or HEIC to JPG). You won't see a single outbound request containing your image. The code is open to inspection.
100 MB per file. The real limit depends mostly on the RAM available on your device — converting a 30 MB photo from JPEG to PNG works fine on a recent phone. Processing is fast because it's local, with no network transfer.
The service is funded by ads displayed on the page. Your images, though, are never accessible server-side — they stay in your browser's memory, period. No upload, no watermark, no sign-up.
Yes — to convert HEIC to JPG, HEIC to PNG or HEIC to WebP, the libheif decoder is compiled to WebAssembly and run in a Web Worker. Converting an iPhone photo usually takes less than a second, with no upload.
Once the page has loaded, you can cut your internet connection: the converter still works. You can install MediaBay as an app (PWA) from your browser for permanent, fast access.
Your data stays on your device — don't close this tab.
